Public Building Under $5 M – Merit Award
U of U College of Social Work
This project proved challenging since it was an addition to a three-story concrete and masonry structure, with a goal of maintaining the structural integrity of the existing building while adding an aesthetical compliment. A ‘bridge’ connects the second stories only – and is self-supporting, while offering great views of the campus and Wasatch Mountains.
Brick, architectural concrete and metal panels highlight the building’s exterior, and provide a level of durability and low maintenance beyond 50 years. Interior hallway floors are finished in Mondo, a rubberized tile floor system which requires virtually no maintenance. Exterior windows have a .28 U factor.
The mechanical system uses the campus-wide high-temp water system, while chilled water from the air cooled chiller is piped underground to the basement mechanical room. The lighting system was designed to exceed the Model Energy Code by using lighting control design to reduce energy waste and specifying high efficient light fixtures.
