Best Public Building Over $5 M
USU David G. Sant Engineering & Innovation Building
The $8.5 million David G. Sant Engineering Innovation Building at Utah State University was built on the old site of the Engineering Classroom Building, which was demolished in January 2007. The Sant Building is a three-story lab designed to allow the maximum amount of flexibility for facility and student use. The project was designed on 22-ft bay spacing that could be easily remodeled into large, or individual laboratory bays. Each bay has its own power sub-panel for flexibility to re-configure the building based on changing needs, minimizing expense in remodels.
The design of the project provides ample natural light using extensive window systems, and glazing into the hallways to provide light to the center of the building. Three types of sunscreens were used to help with efficiency; louvers, a large overhang, and perforated sun screen. The project completed under budget and two months ahead of schedule.
