FrontRunner South will run from Salt Lake City to Provo, extending the commuter rail approximately 44 miles. The project features a single track system with passing siding tracks and double tracks at nine potential stations. When complete, this FrontRunner addition will combine with the already completed FrontRunner North section for a 90-mile commuter rail system that will span the Wasatch Front, with an overall estimated cost of $954 million.

The projected ridership is expected to peak at 12,000 to 15,000 per day by 2025. The commuter rail is substantially different from the TRAX light rail system in that there will be longer distance trips and few stations along the route. Top speed will be realized at nearly 80 miles per hour with 140 seats per car. Each train will be powered by Motive Power MPXPress Locomotives and will have between four and ten Comet I Single Level and Bombardier Bi-Level Passenger and Cab cars. Construction will include safer and quieter designed crossings along the railroad corridor with the installation of raised medians and active signal devices. There will be 41 at-grade crossings. UTA and the Union Pacific Railroad will jointly construct and maintain the respective sides of the crossings. The project began June 2008 and will finish in November 2012.
