This 82,133-sq-ft laboratory will accommodate the Department of Health Bureau of Environmental Chemistry, Microbiology, Forensic Toxicology, Laboratory Improvement and Administration. The project includes a BSL-3 suite containing six labs. This is the first of three modules to be built on the property in order to unify the State of Utah’s laboratories. The three-story structure is structural steel and the exterior is a mix of glass, masonry and metal panel. There is a three-ft atrium in the lobby, and the building has been designed with an emphasis on energy efficiency measures, sustainability, natural light and collaborative areas.

Laboratory facilities have unique requirements that are integral to the design and construction of the project, including safety features to address hazardous and biohazardous materials; security at building entry points; efficiency features such as bench and lab workstations; and laboratory specific systems for exhaust, water and refrigeration. Project is expected to finish November 2009.
