Intermountain Contractor’s Top Projects of 2009 in Utah and Idaho

The commercial construction industry in the Intermountain region (Utah, Idaho) remains in pretty good shape overall, despite the recent woes the past couple of years in the residential construction market, along with realistic fears that the local economy will follow the slowing trend happening in other regions of the country. One thing is certain – there are a number of impressive projects currently under construction in this region, ranging from landmark buildings to state-of-the-art transportation systems to impressive civil/infrastructure projects.

Intermountain Contractor’s list of Top Projects for 2009 includes 83 projects in Utah and Idaho valued at $20 million and above. These projects are either under construction, slated for completion in June, or scheduled to break ground by July 1, 2009. Public projects dominate the list, which is not that surprising given the troubles of the banking and financial industry. In particular, transportation, highway, and K-12 education projects are plentiful, and while there are a few notable private projects on this list, their numbers are considerably fewer. The total value of these 85 projects exceeds $8.5 billion.

Among general building contractors, Okland Construction Co. of Salt Lake City, Layton Construction Co. of Sandy, Utah, and Hogan & Assoc. of Centerville, Utah, each have eight disclosed projects over $20 million (Okland has another four projects it is currently building over $20 million, but actual costs were undisclosed at the owner’s request). Jacobsen Construction Co. of Salt Lake City and Big-D Construction Co. of Salt Lake City each have six projects in the list over $20 million.

Among heavy-highway-civil contractors, Wadsworth Brothers Construction of Draper, Utah is working on five highway projects over $20 million (three as prime GC; two as part of a joint venture team), while W.W. Clyde is part of four heavy/civil projects over $20 million (three as prime GC).

Project information was gathered through McGraw-Hill’s Construction Network and via a survey sent out to firms within the A/E/C industry. We apologize for any projects not included on this list and encourage firms to consider submitting project information for next year’s Top Projects list in June 2010. Not every owner was willing to disclose actual project costs.

Other good news for firms working in the A/E/C industry is that there are a number of significant projects in various design phases that are slated to break ground within the next 6 to 12 months. Among these are a major expansion to the Salt Lake City International Airport ($1 billion-plus overall), a new U.S. District Federal Courthouse in Salt Lake City ($200 million), the $1.725 billion I-15 CORE highway project, and the Mt. View Corridor highway project.

Note: The individual projects being built on the City Creek Center were not disclosed by the owner, Property Reserve Inc., which is a real estate arm of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It is estimated by experts within McGraw-Hill Construction that the overall project cost will ultimately eclipse the $2 billion mark by the time it finishes in spring 2012, therefore the rationale in listing it No. 1 in this region. Utah Transit Authority is the owner of various high-profile mass-transit projects, part of its overall $2.8 billion
