Center of Excellence Project to Aid USSA Athletes

Jacobsen Construction is the general contractor for the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association’s (USSA) new ‘Center of Excellence’ project – a three-story, 85,000 square foot building in Park City, Utah at Quinn’s Junction near U.S. Hwy 40 and SR 248.

The $22.5 million project broke ground in July and will serve as a national training and education facility for USSA. The project will include state-of-the-art amenities such as a gymnasium, climbing walls, strength-training rooms, ski and snowboard ramps, trampolines, and a nutrition center.

“This certainly will be a project that looks good on a company resume,” said architect Alan Poulson of WPA Architecture of Provo, Utah. “It’s one-of-a-kind and unique and the client is very serious about the design of this project.”

Computer and multimedia rooms are also being proposed as part of the project, which will allow USSA athletes an opportunity to analyze their performance.

“It's an historic opportunity for the U.S. Ski Team and U.S. Snowboarding,”
said Juliann Fritz, USSA public relations director.

Slated to begin at the end of July, this 18,770 sq. ft. project includes a structural steel frame with stucco exterior. It was designed by NJRA Architects of Salt Lake City.

ATK Projects Completed

Two major operation sites for ATK Launch Systems, the world’s leading manufacturer of solid rocket motor systems for space launch vehicles, have just gotten a boost. Interior Construction Specialists (ICS) of Sandy, Utah recently completed remodel and tenant improvement work to facilities in Promontory and Magna, Utah.

ATK Launch Systems is headquartered in Promontory, Utah, a site the company has been at for over 50 years, and one that has experienced tremendous growth as of late. ICS completed remodel and renovation work to two different buildings within the project site.

First, ICS completed the first total remodel to ATK Launch Systems’ 66,000 sq. ft. administration area. The project’s scope of work included the complete demolition of the space, the installation of a new electrical and mechanical system, a new fire sprinkler system and an interior build-out for the new office space. ATK needed the new space completed in five months. ICS was able to finish the project on time and within budget under the tight deadline by utilizing graphical schedules and maintaining two-week look-ahead manpower charts to ensure the schedule would be met.

Second, as a result of ATK experiencing tremendous growth and the acquisition of several additional contracts, the company launched a hiring focus and needed a place to house the added staff. ICS completed remodel work to an existing 38,000 sq. ft. area within the Promontory site. The scope of work included the complete demolition of the second floor, the installation of a new mechanical and electrical system, modification to an existing fire sprinkler system and a total interior build-out. The project was somewhat challenging because the first floor remained occupied throughout construction, requiring careful coordination so as to minimize disruption of operations downstairs.

ATK Launch Systems invited ICS to bid on projects at its site in Magna. The major components of this project included the installation of a new mechanical and electrical system and the complete interior build-out of a 37,000 sq. ft. area. This project was completed within an occupied space and required significant scheduling and flexibility. To ensure the project went smoothly and allow ATK employees to continue working without being disturbed, ICS completed the work in several phases.

WGI Awarded Major Clean-Air Project

Boise-based Washington Group International announced that it has been selected to provide engineering, procurement, and construction services for a major clean-air project at Constellation Energy’s Brandon Shores Power Plant in Baltimore, Md. The three-year project will substantially reduce plant emissions – including sulfur dioxide, particulate matter, and mercury – allowing Constellation Energy to meet new Maryland clean-air requirements that take effect in 2010.

Under a limited notice to proceed, Washington Group will perform preliminary engineering while awaiting final regulatory approvals to begin construction later this year. Washington Group’s full scope will be to provide engineering, procurement, and construction services for the installation of several air- quality-control systems – including flue gas desulfurization systems (scrubbers), baghouses to trap particulates and activated carbon injection for mercury control – at the coal-fired, two-unit, 1300-megawatt plant. The scrubbers will be designed to reduce sulfur dioxide emissions by nearly 98 percent. As part of the project, a mile-long conveyor system will be built to transport limestone needed in the desulfurization process from a barge terminal on the Patapsco River to the power plant.
