Skyview Excavating and Big-D to build new department store in Layton

Skyview Excavation & Grading of Morgan has been selected to perform the site preparation for new Kohl's Department Store in Layton. In addition to this 12-acre site, Kohl's is planning to open several other stores in the Utah market in fall, 2004.

Skyview is working under the direction of general contractor Big-D Construction of Salt Lake City.

"This is a super project and we're pleased to be working with Big-D," said owner Ann Waddell.

Skyview was formed in 1984 and also owns a gravel pit in Morgan, Utah. Additionally, Skyview has worked on several recent projects including Davis Conference Center, Salt Lake City Library, U.S. 89 Interchange at Cherry Hill in Kaysville/Farmington, Utah, and Burns Field Airport, Evanston, Wyo.

Local Design-Build Team Receives National Tilt-Up Award

The Tilt-Up Concrete Association (TCA) recently recognized the design-build team for the Morinda Lab / Warehouse project in American Fork with a national award in TCA's eleventh annual Achievement Awards Program. Design-build team members recognized include Robinson Brothers Construction, PGA&W Architects and Dunn Associates, consulting structural engineers.

Designed to handle the bottling and distribution functions of Tahitian Noni International, this 141,085-square-foot manufacturing facility earned the second-highest overall score in the awards competition. Although 22 structures are recognized as winners, three, including the Morinda Lab / Warehouse, received "Excellence in Achievement" distinction for their superiority across all selection categories.

A panel of five individuals representing architects, engineers, developers and contractors judged the competition. Submittals were judged on aesthetic expression, schedule, size, innovation, finishes and special conditions. According to Jim Baty, technical director of the TCA, the judges repeatedly commented on the commitment to innovation and technical detail that this year's award submittals displayed.

One of Morinda's goals was to create a piece of architecture that would enhance the marketing of its product, Tahitian Noni Juice. As such, the tallest, largest and heaviest tilt-up panel, seen from Interstate 15, contains a 16-ft. wide by 20-ft. high cast-art piece similar to the Tahitian Noni's bottle label. Requirements to keep portions of the building open and transparent necessitated that the tilt-up panels be designed to interact with braced frames at glazed area in order to provide one unified seismic resistant system. The tilt-up panels were complemented by other building materials to showcase the different functions housed within the structure. The red brick frames enclose the offices, glazed curtain walls house research development and a curved metal roof protects a visitors' gallery.

The TCA awards program was established to honor projects that use site cast tilt-up concrete to introduce new building types, advance industry technology and provide a unique solution to a building problem. TCA was founded in 1986 to improve the quality and acceptance of site cast tilt-up construction,

Psomas takes on Water Improvement Project in Moticello

Psomas Engineering's Salt Lake City office was recently awarded the Monticello Municipal Watershed Improvement Project. The scope of this project is to construct a new water collection system for the City of Monticello as part of the Municipal Watershed Improvement Project. The project area is located on the Monticello Ranger District of the Manti-LaSal National Forest in the Abajo Mountains in San Juan County, Utah. The project's intent is to replace existing buried pipelines and upgrade and/or replace all of the water collections boxes and enhance water collection.

This project will require extensive federal agency coordination between U.S. EPA Region 8, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Forest Service and the City of Monticello.

The current water collection system has been operating since the 1930's and its deterioration has caused numerous leaks and losses of culinary water. The project will include approximately 18 miles of pipeline and 38-45 collection structures. The project will also require full wetland delineation within the project limits.

Construction of this project is scheduled to occur in the spring of 2004.

The Project Manager is Dan Rasmussen and the on-site superintendent is Ray Jentzsch, both of Cameron Construction. Debi Salisbury is the project coordinator and the architect of record is Mr. Roger Smith, AIA of SL & A Architects, in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Layton Awarded Two New Elementary School Projects

Layton Construction Company recently began construction on two new elementary schools, Beacon Heights Elementary, located in the Salt Lake City School District, and Oaks Elementary, located in the Jordan School District. When complete, the facilities will ease crowding in schools along the Wasatch Front in areas where school populations continue to grow.

The existing 50-year-old Beacon Heights Elementary was demolished by the Sandy-based general contractor and a new 76,000 square-foot school will be rebuilt on the same site. The design incorporates classroom wings radiating off a central rotunda in the new two-story school. Rock veneer salvaged from the original school will be used on the new school.

Beacon Heights Elementary was designed by Gillies Stransky Brems & Smith Architects and will be completed in 2004.

The 66,000 square-foot Oaks Elementary will feature open classrooms through the use of glass, brick and structural steel. Skylights and windows will provide natural light to enhance the learning environment. The school, located in West Jordan, will be completed in 2004.

VCBO Architect of Salt Lake City designed the building.

"Layton Construction has built many schools over the years and school construction continues to be an important part of our business," said Alan S. Layton, President of Layton Construction. "We appreciate working with the Salt Lake and Jordan School Districts to build these new schools, providing enhanced learning environments which will benefit students for years to come."
