Bobcat ‘Road Tour’ Will Roll Through Utah
Scott Machinery’s Intermountain Bobcat division will help host the event at the West Valley Cultural Center July 26; Best of State 2008 honors several local A/E/C firms.
As part of the Bobcat Company’s 50th anniversary celebration this year, the Bobcat 50 Years Unleashed North American Road Tour will visit 23 Bobcat dealers in the United States and Canada, including Utah on July 26 in West Valley City at the West Valley Cultural Center. This traveling exhibit will include an overview of Bobcat history, Bobcat equipment from the last 50 years and Bobcat collectibles and memorabilia from the last half century.
“To us, it’s a big deal,” says Lance Bringhurst, division manager for Intermountain Bobcat, a division of Salt Lake-based Scott Machinery. “It gives us a chance to take part with Bobcat in celebrating 50 years of history.” He says the Saturday event will run from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and will include demonstrations, prize giveaways and a family-style BBQ.
Intermountain Bobcat has locations in Salt Lake, Orem, Ogden and St. George, while Scott Machinery sells Bobcat equipment from its Cedar City and Idaho Falls, Idaho offices. Scott has been a Bobcat dealer since 1995.
Bobcat Company was founded in 1958 when a company from North Dakota created a partnership with two blacksmith-inventor brothers and built an innovative machine called the Melroe Self-Propelled Loader – a three-wheeled, front-end loader that was the precursor to the first skid-steer loader in 1960.
Cameron Earns Recognition
Cameron Construction of Salt Lake City received recognition from Garco Building Systems for the Union Pacific Intermodal Distribution Maintenance Facility Project in Salt Lake City. Cameron received the 2007 Design and Construction Excellence Award in the Transportation and Distribution category.
The Union Pacific Intermodal Distribution project included eight structures that feature a gate administration building, maintenance facility, wastewater treatment building, two security gate canopies, switchman comfort facility, and driver’s kiosk building. Ames Construction provided all of the site work for the complex, while Cameron Construction was responsible for the construction and erection of the buildings.
Garco Building Systems designs and manufactures pre-engineered metal buildings for clients throughout the United States.
Utah Best of State Honors A/E/C Firms
Several firms within the design and construction industry in Utah were honored by the Utah Best of State organization for 2008, including several repeat winners.
Wadsworth Brothers Construction of Draper, Utah was named Best Commercial Contractor for 2008, marking the fourth year in a row the firm has been honored by Best of State in that category. In addition, Wadsworth Brothers was also presented with the ‘BOSS’ award (Best of State Statue) for the first time, which is awarded in the general Business Services category. The company won the honor over other Business Services medal winners, including the likes of Zions Bank.
“Winning the BOSS is a great honor for us and one we never expected,” says Guy Wadsworth, president of Wadsworth Brothers. “It pits the best companies in their respective categories, and we are very excited.”
Wadsworth Brothers was selected based on 16 years of continuous growth, with revenue expected to hit the $100 million mark this year. The firm is involved in a number of innovative highway projects, including building the largest precast deck panel in Utah on the $24 million I-84 project near Morgan, and Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) on I-80 bridge replacements up Parley’s Canyon, which will utilize Self Propelled Modular Transports (SPMTs).
Other A/E/C firms honored include Reaveley Engineers + Associates of Salt Lake City, named Best Structural Engineer for the sixth consecutive year, in addition to being awarded a second medal in the Science and Technology category. Spectrum Engineers of Salt Lake City earned three medals this year, including Best Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, as well as Best Lighting Design. Spectrum has won six straight Electrical Engineering medals, along with five consecutive Mechanical Engineering medals. The firm also won the Lighting Design medal last year.
Staker Parson Companies of Ogden is another repeat winner, having won the medal for Manufacturing-Mineral Mining/Stone Quarrying for the sixth consecutive year.
Other industry-related honors went to Steve Peterson Interiors Unlimited, who captured the medal for Interior Design, while the Utah Department of Transportation earned a medal for Research & Development.
Winners in each of the medal categories are judged on overall excellence, innovation and contributions to the community.
Geneva Rock to Open New Batch Plant
Geneva Rock, a ready-mixed concrete and rock products suppler based in Utah, announced the grand opening of a new concrete batch plant in Tooele. The new state-of-the-art plant will serve the Grantsville and Toole markets with cutting edge technology.
“We’re happy to bring more capacity to a growing area of the state,” said Al Schellenberg, president of Geneva Rock Products. “The new facility will allow us to serve our customers even better.”
The new plant is located at 1730 W. Hwy 112 in Tooele. With the company’s commitment to the environment, Geneva’s construction team recycled 3,000 tons of concrete and 1,500 tons of asphalt that was left on the site by the previous owners to create roads and paved areas for the new facility.
New Corporate Headquarters Being Built for SME
SME Steel’s new corporate headquarters in West Jordan, Utah, is nearing completion, with a formal grand opening slated for later this year. Salt Lake-based GSBS Architects designed this 42,000-sq-ft, 3-story Class A office building. ONYX Construction, also based in West Jordan, was the general contractor.
Design elements include a unique rolled metal siding system, an exposed structural interior and central atrium with skylight. In the atrium, an architectural steel staircase designed and fabricated by Las Vegas-based Southwest Stair, an SME affiliate, spires 3-stories with a single compound core.
EVCO Sponsors Scholarship Program
In honor of its 50th year in Utah, EVCO House of Hose in Salt Lake City has developed a Utah High School Sponsorship Program. EVCO has the goal to award $500 to many high schools across Utah and help to promote healthy values.
EVCO values education, leadership, and achievement. EVCO employees value the communities they live and work in, and they want to help the high schools in Utah succeed. EVCO values the potential of every youth. With this High School Sponsorship Program, community awareness will remain an integral part of the EVCO House of Hose with continued activity in local charities and civic groups.
Spectrum Ranked No. 35 by EC&M
Salt Lake City-based Spectrum Engineers ranked 35th in the nation for total design service revenue in Electrical Construction & Maintenance (EC&M) magazine’s 2008 Top 40 Electrical Design Firms survey (March 2008), up three places from a 2007 ranking of 38. Considering revenues for electrical design services only, EC&M ranked Spectrum Engineers at 26, up one spot from last year. 2008 was the third consecutive year that Spectrum has been ranked in this survey.
Spectrum celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2007, and has offices in Salt Lake City, St. George, Utah and Tempe, Ariz.
